We’re back with another five Halloween animated shorts that you can watch for free online, right now to get into the scary mood for the holiday. Without any further ado, here are five (or more) animated horror shorts!
Kali
By Don’t Walk Home Alone After Dark
Andy Coyle’s animated horror short Youtube page Don’t Walk Home Alone After Dark has been on this list before with The Worm, but this year, after getting a Netflix deal for this channel (more news for that to come) he drops the most gorey installment. Easily an R-Rating “Kali” holds no punches for it’s brutal depictions of a monster horror short.
Best Friends
By DUST
Fantasy and monsters isn’t the only genre that can give us horror. Anyone who’s seen Alien knows that Sci-Fi can bring terror to us just as well. That’s where DUST comes into play as their channel is dedicated to sci-fi horror and pairing with animation we get this tense and personal horror short Best Friends. Seemingly even more relevant 5 years later it depicts a man who’s only friends are the holographic projections in the chip in his head and what happens to a person when that connection is literally RIPPED away. A classic cyberpunk story to send you into some existential terror.
The Horrors’ Horror Home PILOT
Not all of them have to be scary! “Horrors’ of Horror House” takes the whimsical nature of Halloween by making an Adam’s Family style comedy where Sadako from The Ring is married to Dracula and they raise a family together. Directed by Rushio Moriyama we have a fun, dark ink style from old vampire movies with cutesy Japanese anime. If you’re tired of being scared and want something more lighthearted this one is for you.
Uncanny Alley Shorts
By Adult Swim
Here’s a little something from the main stream. Adult Swim makes a name for the short bumpers and indie creations on cable TV so it’s no surprise this series of 3 minute horror short packs a real punch. Using black and white visuals and stellar sound design Uncanny Alley brings a dreary and oppressive atmosphere to the screen. The tinnitus style sounds all throughout each short only add to the creepiness of what you’re watching. An inescapable fate from strange forces we can barely comprehend.
I’m cheating a little bit by including 3 for this entry but I couldn’t exclude any of them from the recommendations. So have some bonus episodes!
Vorace
By Pau Mauve
Now we get to talk about beauty in horror. Vorace is one of the most gorgeous shorts I have ever watched. Pau Mauve captures the Yoshitaka Amano style with a lineless painted rendering creating a lucid dreamlike animation. My only critique is that it’s only a minute long. Taking the themes of sexual overtones from vampire stories Vorace dives into the rapture and danger of blood and lust. Truly a horror short masterpiece to cap off this year’s Halloween short recommendations.
