Sequels, franchises, and a Chinese phenomenon have pushed animated cinema into a new box-office orbit. These are the highest-grossing animated movies of all time.
Animated movies have entered a new box-office age. In 2010, Toy Story 3 became the first animated film to surpass $1 billion worldwide. Fifteen years later, China’s Ne Zha 2 more than doubled that milestone, reaching approximately $2.21 billion.
From Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Inside Out 2, these records reveal how animation moved from hand-drawn masterpeice to CGI blockbuster and how sequels, franchises, and international audiences reshaped the theatrical market.
The infographic below traces seven milestones in the rise of the highest-grossing animated movies of all time.
The Billion-Dollar Animation Era

Milestones in the Animated Box-Office Race
There is something to be said about these numbers being reflective of higher ticket prices and inflation of today. While that is definitely a factor it is worth mentioning that these blockbusters are resonating with audiences enough that significant numbers are showing up despite higher ticket prices at the door. Even anime movies from Japan are grossing higher than they ever have before in the US. Animation has proven a real money maker in the current landscape despite the increase in ticket prices. But this billion dollar era was a long road of milestones from major animated movies that set cultural and monetary peaks from the public reception.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
The foundational feature-length animated blockbuster. It held the record for roughly 55 years, and its inflation-adjusted gross would still rank at the top today at approximately $2.354B.
The Lion King (1994)
The high point of the Disney Renaissance and the last traditionally animated film to hold the overall record. Many re-releases and special editions released to theaters have ballooned its original numbers to $970,707,763.
Finding Nemo
The first 3D computer-animated film to become the highest-grossing animated movie, signaling Pixar’s takeover of the box-office crown.
Toy Story 3
The first animated film to surpass $1 billion worldwide, proving animation could perform on the same blockbuster scale as live-action franchises. Toy Story is also the only animated franchise to have 3 movies gross over $1 billion.
Frozen
Represents Disney’s modern revival. Tangled may have been the first hit from their new CG era but Frozen became a worldwide cultural phenomenon reaching about $1.29 billion
Inside Out 2
A sign of the sequel-driven billion-dollar era this second entry into the franchise rose to the top quickly under a new cast of characters and heavily advertised voice cast. It became the shortest-lived record-holder, keeping the title for only about five months before Zootopia 2 took the crown.
Ne Zha 2
The Chinese mega-hit holds two nominal distinctions. That being the first non-American animated film to hold the record and the first animated film to exceed $2 billion worldwide.
Figures represent worldwide theatrical gross in nominal U.S. dollars. Totals may include re-releases and are not adjusted for inflation unless specifically noted. Figures checked October 2026.|
